some sublime athmospheric techno tracks that go somewhere between dubstep, detroit techno and broken beat / garage. roof light did an excellent job on this 4 track ep with tracks that are light but full of emotion and athmosphere. radiance is for sure one of the high lights with its minimal funky bass line and cut up beats and massive strings layered on top. around here is the main track with its 90s two step rhythm and its deep athmospheric sounds and vocals. ltj bukem goes dubstep? not sure who is the producer... but if its a debut its pretty impressive. great release! must have for all the martyn and 2562 fans!

absolute madness from immerse here, as october is released from his minimal techno day centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers. elephants is a pretty appropriate name for the a, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. flipside, medium opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 recommended review by diccon c/o idjmagazine

the arctic monkeys much anticipated third effort was co produced by queens of the stone age frontman josh homme and james ford. humbug is a voyage somewhere new - its a richer, darker and more powerul sound. its heavy yet melodic mixing offhand self analysis with verbal assaults. turners charismatic vocals remain centre stage with that sweetening flutter of vibrato. the songs remain stories - fabulously wrought and told, set to thrilling and adventurous music. its a more grown up album of irony, guile, riffs and tunes, yet it still very much the arctic monkeys.

technopassion release number five delivers a tremendous blast of techno sound from george le nagelaux that no one can resist. the a side features a massive remix from belgiums ambitious techno star stephane signore. he made a truly energetic version of no resistance that goes forward with melody driven raw power. surely one of the top tracks of the year! the b side features the straight funky original version and our species will not survive , a track that is, as the name suspects, pretty dark. rumbling bass, catchy oldschool synthlines and propulsive beats are the outlines of this piece. no resistance ep is a solid, rhythm packed bundle of uplifting techno music, so go and get your vinyl copy of this one before its out of stock!

yep, thats right. synth pop sensations heartbreak remixed by the horrors. tom furse from the horrors has a fearsome collection of analogue synths and used them to rebuild this track from heartbreaks debut album from the ground up, and a killer job hes done too. as ali and sebastian from heartbreak both release on dissident their label lex thought it would be a good idea if dissident did the 12 inch release. obviously due to the nature of this release and the addition of the combined horrors / heartbreak fanbase its pretty much an instant collectors item and will fly out of the door at a fair old rate of knots so please make sure you order enough to keep everyone happy, i doubt well have any of these left by the end of the week. the clip is taken from the second half of the track as it turns into a glorious cosmic synthesizer orgy, theres plenty of arpeggiated trackiness before it gets to this bit

the mind melt keeps melting. pretty soon we will just be puddles of freaky essential oils, reduced down to our effervescent essence, like jasmine, or dry kool-aid. of course we are talking about onur Ízers album kasmir, the gift that keeps on giving. once again renowned artists have come out in full force reworking selected tracks off onurs album for vakants remix-only vr. first up is mr. rajko m³ller, better known as isolÚe, who having spent some time growing up in algeria, continues with the african remixer theme (tunisian born loco dice remixed eclipse on part 1. you know us, as if we even need an excuse to work in africa somehow.) isolÚe takes onurs otherwise chilling innervoice and reinterprets it into a thick warm blanket of reassuring bounce. flipping the record inverts dimensions of time and space. abyssfully deep legend baby ford takes the already ethereal aida and turns it into the soundtrack for finding the god particle. its scary, yes, but ultimately it could explain everything.

lyrical wit is in abundance, magnified by russell maels soaring falsetto gymnastics. failure with the opposite sex is a recurring topic, from the adolescent fumblings of amateur hour to the resignation of falling in love with myself again. its easy to see why the teenage morrissey was a dedicated fan. the track that really grabbed the publics attention was this town aint big enough for both of us, a classic stomper with a gravity defying melody. 1974s kimono my house is the sound of sparks firing on all four cylinders, providing one of the most curious and comical albums of the 70s. freddie mercury wasnt the only operatic rocker on the block in the mid 70s. the genre was pretty much taken to its logical conclusion by ron and russell mael, the decidedly odd couple who formed the nucleus of sparks. dropping references to immanuel kant and yehudi menuhin, these boys werent your average dumb rock band. kimono my house was their third album, recorded after the brothers had relocated from la to london (where tolerance of tongue in cheek pomp pop was obviously much higher).

te amo is a forgotten gem originally released on the volumex label back in 1993 and then licensed to the legendary vc records in the u.k. with mixes from john digweed. this was a huge anthem back in the early 90s full of balearic passion and happiness which is often missing in todayÆs music. but lets not get carried away in the memories of the past and check out these brand new mixes. in fact, the record makes a fine return to todays scene thanks to brilliant interpretations from two of our favourite djs/producers out there: hotly tipped paolo mojo and tapesh.to round off one pretty nifty package, the original caliente mix is enclosed also. and this still sounds as relevant today as it did almost two decades ago. a blast from the past indeed! very similar to releases on record labels like cr2, defected and toolroom.

here it is the first official ost on permanent vacation: gutterballs. gutterballs, by ryan nicholson, is a groovy, sleazy and pretty dang gory grindhouse revival slasher in the vein of the great 80 s horrorfilms. the film takes place during a midnight disco bowl-a-rama at a popular bowling alley, which leads directly to the great soundtrack by gianni rossi, who composed a mix between classic, goblin-esque, synthie flavoured, horror-movie soundscapes and uplifting italo pop/rock.

killer release from the fbi guys. expect pure class electro between minimal and house with their recognisable touchà one for the dancefloor for sure, and a pretty good follow up to their two previous releases on the raw fusion label.

lithuanian producer paulius lincius (aka moon disco) presents his first vinyl release on the respected control tower label, run by the dexorcist & radioactive man, and shows a subtlety and deftness of touch that many more experienced producers would envy. treading the path of classic electro can be a dangerous game if the sounds arent just so, but fortunately paulius has been doing his homework and keeps it simple and clean. radioactive man offers up a remix that roughens things up a little bit and throws some datasette-esque sounds into the equation, but still keeps pretty close to the traditional electro blueprint. overall a strong release for those that prefer their beats and bass with a slightly nostalgic edge...

our spanish collegues oel polygon have redefined themselves. leo and omar cobble on together as a re-up in musical togetherness. nonchalantly as usual- the two keep on cooking crispy tech-house to the limits and let the heart of the club-gourmets melt away. between venice and barcelona they have peeled especially pretty models out of their sequencer. “inside us” is telling us a lot about the drive of the record and strives with tough techno-vocals the hit pig across the upon you court. once you’ve wrapped out the a1 bon-bon you’ll find yourself greedily diving into the b-side, which- together with “phonobox” and “dos por dos” skilfully completes the box of candies

>were back with a couple quick and sneaky mixes of >rave is king< for early 2009, we just didnt think you had enough of this anthem last year. first up on the take is atls blog wonderkid le castle vania who keeps things pretty close to the original but just a little heavier and a lot more twisted vocoder effects on the vocals. on the flip we have berlins nhan & taan with their electro boogie mix. on first listen the n&t mix sounds like a banger of a downtempo head-nodder but if come up into some serious electro madness primes for the most discerning djs with a flair for the old school. again we remind you, rave is still king !!! coco machete team<

refreshing as a blast of warm disco breeze to the nether regions comes this sultrily intoxicating outing which sees hanna produced in paris by purple musics alfred azzetto and italys vincent valler, accompanied by a genre straddling array of mixes. the french sung tune recalls classic french disco while the backdrops are sympathetic despite their diversity: alfreds sub sub mix stretches around the incredibly catchy song as a sexy piano vamp, dj fopp & walterino take the straightahead house route, ii moods recall knuckless 90s productions with lashings of stately piano, christian hornbostel goes for minimal dub, souldynamic & fioresehome home in on the sexy vocal over a gathering acid storm to delirious effect and blacksoul uncork a thumping deep house excursion uncannily recalling late 80s chicago with bare piano and haunting textures before switching gear to new york of that period. each one is dominated by that great vocal, the sort that sounds great on whatever you place it on apart from david camerons beat box bottom. pretty essential.

in contrast to a recurring theme of uninviting releases by labels that seem to offer tracks- so easy to digest they get lost with an un-inspiring and flat feel, the collaboration of hermanez and ramom tapia is a coupling of dark moods and techy deepness, listen even deeper and you?l find a wealth of detail stuffed full of mythical rides push an organ into a dark corner and have it brutally assaulted by a groove-hungry gang of latin approved drums and the outcome is pretty much that of miconns second release. syncopated sturdy percussion and hi hats sit amongst a spring-loaded beat whilst lazy organ keys relax the pace

rarities and b sides collection sawdust includes all the pretty faces (which was the b side of when you were young), two movie soundtrack tunes, shadowplay (a joy division cover from control, anton corbijns biopic of ian curtis) and move away (from spiderman 3), as well as a cover of kenny rogers and the first editions ruby, dont take your love to town (written by mel tillis). the collection also contains songs which werent completed for hot fuss and sams town. the killers recently went back into the studio to finish the tracks, including tranquilize featuring lou reed.

planet rhythm is steadily working its way towards a respectable 70 releases. during the last couple of years the label has brought some of the best underground techno and the future is still pretty bright. again its time for the spanish connection in the form of exium! these guys are known for their extremely well crafted work on nheoma and audio assault.this is no exception, deep spaced out techno that works perfect on the dancefloor. audio assault labelboss bas mooy has shown to be a talented producer over the last few years. the man from rotterdam has stayed true to the darker sound of pure techno. this stuff is the result of the fact that bas was born and raised in one of the worlds most technoid cities - molten metal and gallons of raw oil seem to be pumping thru this mans vessels!

its about time that i put you all up on some more electro...yeh, i know, ive been pretty biased with all the hip hop & sneaker posts! the blogs going to have a bit of a facelift soon, including some of the content, so stay tuned! anyhow, this gem comes from french duo donovan. to sum up their style, theyve got a chromeo-esque kind of sound to them, crunchy electro with an 80s feel. theyve also banged out some sick remixes for the likes of sebasiten tellier & in the club (their remix of turn you on is straight fire). breakin sounds great dave spoon (radio 1 - worldwide) yet another quality release from work it baby. this label really has developed its own sound release by release and its always a great quality especially in these days of all the same.matteo esse (cosmonote srl / various worldwide) charlie fanclub remix is real nice dj neoteric (many / dubsided records / national + international touring) i fucking love the charlie fanclub mix, totally up my street. i will be hammering it. fusing some weird italo-ish vibes together with some unmistakenly drexciyan influences this is a pretty unique release on rh! concepts often bring interesting results and this is no exception.. i think its going to be a real >love it or hate it< record. yurotrago take the track somewhere completely different, stretching it out on a different kind of vision. awesome deep and moody action for the floor. the packaging is awesome for this one

two key players of the scene join forces on figures sixteenth release. no one else than adam beyer and luke slater contribute tracks to this very special ep. mod by luke slaters planetary assault systems project takes off with a fast, breathless groove. its force drags the dancers along, and the mesmerizing bleeps put everybody in a deep trance. within seconds, the solid ground of the dancefloor is nothing but a remote memory. mod has a very special aura, it is hard to grasp its exceptional energy. it appears to be pretty elementary, and yet it is an verwhelming techno anthem which will accompany you for quite some time. adam beyers simulated usage surprises the crowd with its elegance and subtlety. forming an irresistible funk, the fabric of the track interweaves various tiny elements. this savageness obviously manifests in his musical approach which can be characterized by his open-mindedness in regard to diverse influences, currents and styles. simulated usage is strong and joyful, it is techno in its best sense. once again, adam beyer und luke slater manage to coin the face of contemporary club music.

the second release of audio parish records comes from men in trees. men in trees is a new producer/dj- duo from germany. they provide us with with percussive and groovy house tunes. the first ep comes as a 2-tracker. >rita cala prada< on the flip starts with a massive groove, with pretty good drums and a crazy dialogue between three spanish people. than the track is growing up with a deep male vocal. >planet calypso< impresses with crunchy percussion and an uplifting bassline. funky horns and jazzy trompets filled this track with a balearic feeling… welcome to planet calypso! this is an ep with two funky tribal tracks that makes you curious.

another serious result from our warehouse rummaging! si begg is a man of many musical personalities, his list of aliases is impressive to say the least (bigfoot, buckfunk3000, lenny logan, s.i. futures, zygmunt janowski...). but one of his oldest, and certainly one of his strangest, is cabbage boy. in fact i confess i am old enough to remember his releases in the early 90s on cassette tape under the umbrella of the >cabbage head collective< (which also included such techno notables as cristian vogel & tim wright) - and pretty mental they were too. the lost tapes vol. 1 doesnt disappoint on that front, containing such gems as a remix of 80s pop mysteries frank chickens>we are ninja<, and an electronic cover version of >king kong< by frank zappa (ask your parents...). totally out there, but totally cool at the same time...highly recommended to anyone looking for something with some real personality amidst the hard-drives full of faceless (and usually nameless) digital fluff

as a taster, this is a splendid dj friendly 12inch that makes a pretty good attempt to capture the spirit of the chair in just 3 tracks.
